Tommy Overstreet...

Thomas Cary Overstreet was born 1937 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Overstreet grew up in Houston, the home-town of his uncle, the 30s pop singer Gene Austin, and learned to play the guitar at the age of 14. During 1956-57, he studied radio and television production at the University of Texas and also featured on Slim Willett's local television show.

In 1967, he moved to Nashville, where his University training saw him become manager of Dot Records' office. He also recorded for the label and after two minor hits, he had a Top 5 US country and minor pop hit with "Gwen (Congratulations)". This launched his career, and during the 70s, he registered 27 Billboard country chart hits including; "Ann (Don't Go Runnin')", "Heaven Is My Woman's Love" and "(Jeannie Marie) You Were A Lady".

He left Dot in 1979 and had six minor hits on Elektra Records, including "What More Could A Man Need", but by the early 80s he was recording for minor labels. By this time, he had become a polished cabaret-style entertainer, far removed from any country roots; many may perhaps doubt that any ever really existed. He had a minor chart hit with "Next To You" in 1986.
